WILLIAM DARKE
(1736-1801) Major General of Virginia militia who first fought under Braddock during the French and Indian War. Captured at Germantown, Oct. 4, 1777 and exchanged in 1780. As a member of the Virginia legislature in 1788, he voted for a Federal constitution. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 'Wm. Darke' as a British prisoner of war, 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], Aug. 2, 1780, about three months before he would be exchanged, requesting that a fellow officer purchase a horse for him out of his back pay. In part: '...Lt. Col. Fowler should go to Philadelphia. I hope he will be so kind as to endeavor to get the money for me. The body of war agreed to allow the Phil’d. prisoners. Remember I paid my own boaad from the 4th Oct. 77 until the 2nd March 79 which amounts to...2 dollars pr. week...if it is not to be had in hard money. He will please...try to get in Continental[s]...send it to Capt. John Cooke for the purpose of buying me a horse…the money I expect to draw as rearage at Phil’d...will be sufficient to buy the horse...'. Included is a published portrait of Darke as a Continental officer. Fold splits, otherwise very good.
