WILLIAM FLOYD AND WILLIAM WILLIAMS
Rare combinations of signatures of Signers of the Declaration of Independence on a single documents, those of WILLIAM FLOYD (1734-1821), Signer from New York and a major general of militia, and WILLIAM WILLIAMS (1731-1811), Signer from Connecticut, The document is a receipt, 1p. 11 x 3 in., Lebanon, Ct., June 21, 1782, written in Williams hand and signed by him in the text. He writes, in part: '...Received of Mr. Tracy[?] Lawrence, by ye Hand of Col. Wm Williams the sum of Twenty four pounds lawful money of N. England, being on acct of a Debt due to me from Thomas Tunnisey[?] whose estate is confiscated &c agreeable to your possession of a [?] Assembly of this State...' Floyd signs 'Wm. Floyd' at conclusion, his signature cross-written by another unknown signature confirming payment. Floyd had a claim against the man, undoubtedly a Tory whose lands were confiscated and sold, and in this document his fellow Signer hands him his due payment. Very good. A very rare, if not unique combination of Signers' signatures!
