"UNION OF JEWISH FRONT-LINE SOLDIERS " MEMBERSHIP BADGE
Very rare numbered "honor badge" from the Austrian "Bund Juedischer Frontsoldaten" ("Union of Jewish Front-Line Soldiers") in Austria. The organization was founded in 1932 in response to the growing support for National Socialism and its attendant antisemitism in Austria. The large bronze badge measures 2 in. tall with the letters "B J F " in relief at center, psurrounded by crossed swords and laurel leaves. The badge, which has a pin back, is numbered "59" According to the typed description included, this member number was attached to a "Herrmann Bloch from BOG III, the Vienna branch of the BJF in the 3rd district of Vienna". Fine condition. Jews had been excluded from Austria's other veteran groups and so formed organizations such as the BJF to demonstrate their patriotism. The Bund supported Jewish settlement in Palestine and the Dollfuss regime, despite the latter's anti-Semitic stance.
