THIRD REICH PUBLISHES AND MOCKS A JEWISH MAN'S POETRY
Upsetting Third Reich booklet: "Der Brennende Dornbusch: Mystik Im Dienste Judischer Weltherrschaft" ("The Burning Thorn Bush: Mysticism in the Service of Jewish World Domination"), (Berlin: Bodung-Verlag), 1938. 31pp. 8vo., containing the six original poems of Louis Levy, a Danish Jew who served on the board of the Danish Writers' Association during the early 1920s. His poetry, however, had not been published willingly, as Jens Peterson - who pledged in the book's preface to find the poetry after hearing it read before a festival in Copenhagen - found and published this collection document, jokingly adding: "This document is handed over to the public so that the non-Jew can "˜listen to wisdom that dwells in Jews". Peterson adds his own caustic anti-Semitic comments after each poem. Levy's poem "The Time is Here!" reads in part: "This is how our destiny has been shaped, that we became the salt of peace in the veins of nations, the living will of world peace...But we are more: we are a nation among the nations, Do you remember that? We know it - peace is to win last. But let it happen through us!" Peterson writes in response: "The Jews have always considered it necessary to overstretch... ...crushed themselves in a money war that for years brought self-destruction, humiliation, and hopelessness to the world..." Levy adds similarly anti-Semitic comments to the other six eloquently-written poems. Slight spots of foxing, blue ink markings added to the front cover, else fine.
