AN ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON LATE 19TH C
An antique Russian icon with the plot "The Fiery Ascent of the Prophet Elijah". The lower part of the icon depicts a prophet in the desert; a prophet instructed by an angel; the prophet with his successor - Elisha. In the upper part, the holy prophet Elijah ascends to heaven in a chariot drawn by winged horses. The icon consists of wood painted with tempera and a silvered risa, decorated with gilding, engraving, and embossing.
Dimensions: 12 1/2 x 10 3/4 in. (31.8 x 27.3 cm.)
