CENTRAL AFRICAN WOODEN FANG BYERI RELIQUARY FIGURE
A Central African Fang people Byeri reliquary figure from Gabon. Represents a hand carved male figure with exaggerated physical features. The lower part is simplified to represent an elongated cylindrical base. The face is bounded from above by high semicircles of eyebrows and is often made in the shape of a heart, eyebrows, and nose form a single convex line, mouth, and small cut chin protrude strongly forward. The figures form and design often symbolize the continuity between the human and spirit worlds. Each element is carefully crafted to convey the spiritual and cultural essence of the object.
