Rare Sgian Dubh Implement in Bog Oak w/Large Citrine and Silver Embellishment
This unusual find is a decorative and useful Scottish Sgain Dubh weapon which was used in hand-to-hand combat. This Sgain Dubh, which is crafted in bog oak, has a huge citrine crowning the top of the weapon @ approx 29.5mm in diameter set in an ornate open-metal worked bezel. The main blade is 6 1/2" long and there is a second implement which has a smaller, 13.5mm citrine, also set in an elaborate bezel having a 2 1/4" blade. The last, and third implement has a broken top and a fork-type implement that is 2" long. The back of the Sgian Dubh has a bar so it can be attached to a strap or ribbon, and the silver decoration has four hallmarks, first is "O.P., " second are leaves with a thistle, third is unknown and fourth is a "C." The piece has a split in the wood at the reverse top, and the lower part seems to be wrapped in a leather or leather-type material.
