Joel Freud (1901-1981), preliminary sketch in Aquarell of the painting "The Jewish Soldier on the Horse" from the late 1920's (also sold in this auction, Item No. 120). The painting clearly shows a Star of David on the saddle. 37X28 cm.
Joel Freud was born into a religious family in Lublin at the beginning of the 20th century. Following increasing anti-Semitic incidents in Poland, and even those referred directly to him, he left Lublin for Sofia and from there immigrated to Palestine in the late 1920's. Was a Zionist activist during his youth, and an artist who tried to capture the ruins of the Jewish culture of his town in many of his paintings.
