The work in question is a typical example of the production of Carlo Maratta, a Roman artist active between the second half of the 17th and the first half of the 18th. Maratta was a central figure of Roman and Italian painting of this era, and during his life he was celebrated as the greatest painter of his time. In his youth, the painter was nicknamed 'Carluccio delle Madonne', being the inventor of specific Marian iconographies to which he conferred an ideal feeling of beauty, offering us a devotional model that influenced artists until the modern age. The work in question can be attributed to a painter heavily influenced by his works.
