Maharam Schiff. Homberg, 1737 - The engraving of the whale
Hidushey Halachot by Mahara'm Schiff, on Tractates Beitza, Bava Matzia, Ketubut, Chulin and Gittin. Homberg, 1737. Separate title page for the second part.
At the top of the title page is an interesting engraving of a whale emerging from the water in front of a ship, alluding to the author's name 'Shif' - a ship, in Yiddish, as well as the Talmudic Sea. And in the words of the author's grandson in the introduction: "As Rabbi Meir Schiff ... from Cabernet (= captain) a ship that goes in the great sea of the Talmud ... This is the book of the genius Mhara'm Schiff, like a ship in the heart of the Talmudic sea... deep deep who will we find? " And also with the approval of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Katzenelboigen, Av Beit Din of Brisk (in the Paritzak edition, 1810): "כבוד הרב הגאון הגדול... ספינ"ה שהיא טהורה, הוא המנוח הגאון החסיד זצ"ל המהר"ם שי"ף...". It is interesting to note that the relative of Maharam Schiff, Rabbi Meir son of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Schiff (Rabbi of Frankfurt am Main, died 1807), also known as "the second Mahara'm Schiff", published his innovations under the name "Through a ship in the heart of the Talmudic Sea", and in its introduction one of the reasons for naming the book is:" because it is a family nickname and my father's house."
