In 1923, Mordechai Golinkin [1875-1963] founded the first opera house in Eretz Israel - the "Eretz Israel Opera". Golinkin conductor in St. Petersburg, read Jewish newspapers (including "Razsvit") and concluded that the revival of the people of Israel in the Land of Israel would not be possible without a cultural revival that would also include the establishment of a Hebrew opera. In 1917 he heard the Balfour Declaration, and decided to fulfill a dream - the establishment of a Hebrew opera house in the Land of Israel. Golinkin's original intention was to establish it in Jerusalem, and the reason for choosing Tel Aviv was prosaic - most of the musicians and artists lived and created in the city. Golinkin headed the opera for four years, during which time he staged no less than 17 productions, most notably "Faust", "Samson and Delila", "Aida" and "the Huguenots".
