The Lending at interest Jewish Shylock holds the bag of money in his hand - an antisemitic sculpture. England, 20th century


An antisemitic porcelain sculpture depicting the character of Shylock - the antisemitic stereotype of the stingy Jew who Lending at interest, from William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice (written in the 16th century). Made by MELBA WARE - H. WAIN & SONS Signed at the base: "H Wain & Sons Ltd, Melba Works Longton, Stoke on Trent Made in England" - the company began production in 1946 and closed in the 1980s.


Shylock in the play is a negative character: a Jew who pursues greed, and amoral, lending at interest, Whose actions are contrary to the nature of good man. Shylock the Jew Lent to Antonio Christian three thousand ducats, and makes with him a condition in a written and signed note that if he does not repay in time the authority of a Jew to cut from his body a liter of meat. Antonio lost his fortune and could not repay the debt, and Shylock, decided to take revenge on Antonio and cut a liter of his flesh on the heart side. Shylock proves the Christians for discriminatory treatment and their immorality towards the Jews, and he plots to use their own laws against them. The play is accompanied by harsh antisemitic passages against the selfish nature of the Jews, and he caused to an outbreak of waves of antisemitism to Europe over the years. And when there were disagreements between Jews and Christians, the play served as a backdrop for antisemitic stereotypical representation of the Jew as a threat to the decent Christian community.
