SYRIE D'AUJOURD'HUI VOYAGES DANS LA PHENICIE, LE LIBAN ET LA JUDEE 1875-1880 - Travel book in Phenicia, Lebanon, and Judea in 1875-1880 by Luis Lortet, Paris 1884. First edition.
In 1875, Dr. Luis Lorett was sent on a mission to the Land of Israel, Syria, and Egypt to collect botanical specimens for the Lyon Natural History Museum. In this book, Lorett presented the results of his extensive travels and research. The thick-bellied book is accompanied by 364 high-quality woodcuts depicting landscapes and figures in the East, and 9 maps (Including a map of Jerusalem). The book contains several illustrations based on photographs of Bonfis in the area (including an engraving of worshipers at the Western Wall). In the book, a special chapter which was dedicated to Jerusalem and the place of the Temple.
Luxurious red cover with embellishments and gilt inscription in embossing. Gilt leaf cutting. Printed on thick, fine paper.
[4], 675 p. 35 cm. Stains on some of the leaves. Tear on the upper part of the spine. Good condition.
