Napoléon Devant Madrid - Napoleon accepts the surrender of Madrid - Hand-painted engraving by Carle Vernet c. 1850.
An engraving of the famous scene in which Spain surrenders to Napoleon. In November 1808, Napoleon waged a swift and brilliant campaign, making extensive use of forceps tactics, taking Spain by storm in what was described as an "avalanche of fire and metal". By early December, almost all of Spain had been conquered. Napoleon removed King Ferdinand from his throne, and appointed his older brother Joseph Bonaparte as King of Spain.
Frame size: 36x27 cm. The engraving itself: 18x14 cm. Stains on white margins. Good- very good condition.
