Seven photographs from the Warsaw ghetto after being set on fire by the Nazis

7 photographs depicting sights from the Warsaw ghetto after it was set on fire by the Nazis in response to the Warsaw ghetto uprising. April 1943.

The photographs show the ruined ghetto buildings, piles of ashes on the sides of the streets, and collapsed walls.

The final liquidation of the ghetto began on the eve of Passover, April 19, 1943. On April 22, the Germans began systematically burning the ghetto houses in response to the Jewish uprising that began three days earlier and led to casualties among the German army. In the following days, huge flames gripped the ghetto. Jews in the ghetto were forced to abandon their burning houses and fall to the Germans, who led them to the transport plaza. Alongside this, there were many who managed to continue to hide, which forced the Germans to blow up and burn the entire ghetto. About 6,000 Jews were burned in hiding or suffocated by smoke. On May 16, General Jürgen Stroop, who had been brought to Warsaw for the purpose of liquidating the ghetto, announced that the aktion had ended. He reported that "there is no longer a Jewish quarter in Warsaw, " and ordered that the Great Synagogue of Warsaw be blown up. However, lone survivors conducted several more gun battles until June from the ruins.
