Proclamation by the "Government of the Free Jews" calling for the establishment of a Jewish government in America in the midst of the Holocaust
A proclamation on behalf of the Palestine League for the Government of the free Jews in the Diaspora, calling for the establishment of a temporary Jewish government abroad In order to eliminate the torments of exile 'and secure the homeland for our people'. Spring 1943.
The proclamation opens with the appalling fact that "in the last four years no less than two million Jews have been murdered and slaughtered in Europe" and appeals to the people that the time has come to establish a supreme state institution that will unite the nation to save the refugees. The proclamation announces that the first congress of the league will convene in the days of Passover 1943, when the goal is to establish a temporary Jewish government in the United States.
The fact that various initiatives arose to establish a Jewish political body in the United States during the Holocaust, has disappeared from the history books. Before us a rare and important historical document of such initiatives, especially at a time when the dream of the Jewish state in the Land of Israel seemed to be receding due to the extermination of European Jewry, and the persecution of Jews that only worsened in those months.
