Collection of early documents belonging to Heinrich Appel, a Jewish soldier who served in the British Air Force during World War II. Appel was born in Vienna, Austria, and completed studies there. During the war, he served as a pilot in the British Air Force, and after the war he immigrated to Eretz Israel. Appearing: personal certificates, documents, and pages in handwriting from three periods - Vienna, Wartime, and Israel.


Among the items are:

  • Recruitment form for the Royal Air Force dated July 10, 1940, in which Appel commits to perform any duty required of him as a pilot, fly any type of aircraft assigned to him, anywhere in the world; a detailed questionnaire with his personal details on four pages - concluding with a signed statement of loyalty to King George VI, his heirs and successors, committing to carry out any orders given to him by officers of the Royal Air Force.
  • Appel's military service certificate from the British Army during World War II.
  • Letters he wrote to his wife Gita during the war, and letters from her to him.
  • Notebook with recipes for pastries in Appel's handwriting (German).
  • Several personal documents belonging to Appel from the time he lived in Vienna - High school diploma from the public school in Vienna, certificate of completion of baking course, a certificate of entitlement to housing in Vienna, certificates from a public vocational training school in Vienna, and a certificate of membership in the Federation of Industrial Workers in Austria.
