The Itinerary of Benjamin of Tudela - First Latin Edition - Miniature - Leiden, 1633
ITINERARIUM BENJAMINIS LATINE REDDITUM oprrd const l'empervr published by Lugd. Batavorum: ex officina Elzeviriana, 1633 - First Latin edition, Leiden (Netherlands) 1633 - Complete edition with original parchment cover and all index pages. This edition was released in a miniature format - 9 cm!
The first Latin edition of the famous travel book by Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela, who embarked on his long journey across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa around 1165. Benjamin started his journey in Rome and Constantinople, traveled through the Middle East, passing through Syria and the Land of Israel until reaching Baghdad. From there, he continued to Persia and the Arabian Peninsula, returning through Egypt and North Africa to Spain in 1173. The description of his journey he wrote in his book "Massa'ot Benyamin" in Hebrew and was first published in Ferrara by Abraham ibn Usque in 1554.
His book is one of the earliest and most important travel books ever written, both for the study of historical events of the jews and as a source of knowledge about the geography and ethnography of the medieval era. Starting from the 16th century, Benjamin of Tudela's book was translated into most European languages and he is considered the famous Jewish traveler in the world.
In this year, two editions of different sizes were printed - the edition before us in Latin only, and a Latin edition with a Hebrew translation column by column (see Ben Ya'akov p. 346 no. 1623).
