A group photo of pupils of the Etz Chaim yeshiva, their Rabbis, headed by a rare photograph of the 'Saba Kadishah' Rabbi Shmuel Salant 'Shlit"a' [1908] - Photographer: Tzadok Bassan

A group photo of pupils of the Etz Chaim yeshiva, their Rabbis, headed by a rare photograph of the 'Saba Kadishah' Rabbi Shmuel Salant 'shlit"a' [1908] - Photographer: Tzadok Bassan.

The photograph was taken while the yeshiva was sitting in the Hurva courtyard in the Old City of Jerusalem, a few months before the passing of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. Above his picture appears the caption: 'This picture was made only for the benefit of the general Etz Chaim and there is no authority for any institution or individual to copy'. Apparently following the practice of Rabbi Shmuel Salant not to be photographed, he went out of his way to benefit the institutions of the yeshiva and agreed that they would photograph him for its benefit. We know of a similar photograph by Bassan that is slightly different from the one before us, where on the right and left are photographs of the yeshiva pupils on the yeshiva's balcony. Before us, he added two rare photographs of Groups of eaters from the yeshiva's stew house, where pupils can be seen in typical Jerusalem clothing, next to pupils in typical Oriental costumes.
