"Schindler's List" tells the true story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who during the Holocaust, saved the lives of many Jews from the Nazi extermination machine. Originally director Steven Spielberg intended to make "Schindler's List" as a television movie but failed to secure the necessary funding. He admitted hesitating to direct the film at first because he felt the subject matter was too difficult to emotionally process. The British actor Liam Neeson, who portrayed the character of Oskar Schindler, did not speak German prior to filming and learned the language specifically for the role. Ralph Fiennes, who played the role of Amon Goeth the Nazi commandant of Plaszow, also learned to speak with a German accent for the role. The film was shot in Poland itself over the course of six months, and many of the selected actors, including Holocaust survivors, served as extras in the film. It is important to mention that director Steven Spielberg refused to accept payment for his directing work and donated his profits to the Shoah Foundation, an organization dedicated to collecting and preserving oral testimonies of Holocaust survivors. The film was filmed in black and white in Poland, as Spielberg wanted to capture the locations where the events themselves took place. It is considered one of the most important films ever made, immortalizing the memory of the Holocaust and bringing the harsh realities of the Holocaust to the awareness of millions worldwide. The film was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won seven, including Best film, Best Director (Steven Spielberg), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Steven Zaillian).
