A photograph of Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels speaking at the opening of the "Great German Exhibition". July 1940

A photograph of Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels speaking At the opening conference of the Great German Art Exhibition - Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung - in the presence of senior officials of the German Reich. Munich, July 29, 1940. Described on the back in a typewriter on the photographer's piece of paper.

The Great German Art Exhibition was held a total of eight times between 1937 and 1944 in the German Art House in Munich, which was built especially for this purpose. It was representative of art under National Socialism and is considered the most important cultural event in the Nazi state. The artistic management of the event was supervised by Adolf Hitler's personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann as "representative of the president of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts" which Hitler himself appointed. The "Great German Art Exhibition" officially opened on July 18, 1937. The opening speech was given by Adolf Hitler in which he explained what "German art" is based on race according to the Nazi definition, and pointed out that in the future this is the only art that will be allowed in public: "From now on we will conduct a ceaseless war of purification... All the artistic frauds who support each other are removed and eliminated. For our sake, let those prehistoric stone-age cultures... return to the caves of their ancestors to put there their primitive international scribbles" (Hitler in the opening speech in Munich July 18, 1937). As an example of art that is now banned, the exhibition entartete "Kunst" - "Degenerate Art" was held in which works by Jewish artists who were sentenced to elimination according to the Nazi system were presented. The exhibition featured typically German works of art that were constantly being sold and replaced by others.
