Journey to the Holy Land by William Hepworth Dixon, London 1865 - First Edition. Two volumes. Illustrations and maps throughout the text.
The author William Dixon [1821-1879] was an English historian and tourist (Passionate supporter of women's rights), undertook his journey to Eretz Israel in 1863. Upon his return to England he was part of the team that established the Palestine Exploration Fund, which he later headed. The two volumes before us provide vivid and engaging descriptions of the places he visited on his journey to the Holy Land. Dixon writes about the people, customs, religions and history of the land, offering his own insights and observations of what he saw. The book is divided into two parts. The first part describes his journey from Beirut to Jerusalem, the second part describes his travels throughout the Holy Land.
