Scenes in the East - lithographs. London 1887

Scenes in the east: TWELVE COLOURED PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS - A travel book containing 12 chromolithographic colour plates of Eretz Israel landscapes by one of the 19th century's leading researchers of Eretz Israel's natural history, H. B. Tristram. London 1887 - Original cover with gilt embossing, gilt leaf cutting.

The book features chromolithographic colour plates - a new printing process during the period that allowed high quality reproduction of colour photographs. The results were amazing and the book enjoyed great popular success upon its initial release. The full page plates depict views from Silwan, Jericho, Jaffa, the Jordan River, Tiberias, Sidon, Jerusalem sites, Gaza and others. This edition first featured a lithograph of Jaffa with a view of the empty sand dunes where the city of Tel Aviv would eventually be established before its founding.

49 [1] p. 29 cm. Each lithograph protected by thin paper. Stains on some leaves. Two lithographs detached. Overall good condition.
