"The Jews in the Lower Danube" - an anti-Semitic publication against Vienna Jewry, [1940]

Die Juden in Niederdonau. Niederdonau, Ahnengau des Führers, Schriftenreihe für Heimat und Volk. - "The Jews in Lower Danube. Lower Danube, ancestral home of the leader, series of publications for homeland and people", by Otto Henke. Published by Niederdonau Gaupresseamt of the NSDAP - Nazi party. No place of printing noted, [c. 1940]. German.

An antisemitic publication meant to justify the persecution of Jews in Vienna by the Nazis. The author falsely describes how over the years the Jews settled in Vienna through manipulation, deceit and gaining power over the authorities since ancient times, continuing in the Middle Ages and modern era. He describes the recurring expulsions of Jews from their homes over history - King Albrecht's expulsion of Jews from Vienna, Jewish influence in Western Germany, and the reaction of principalities repeatedly expelling them due to an inability to deal with the Jewish population's existence. The purpose of the anti-Semitic writer is to claim that the Jews in Austria survived at the expense of the kingdoms and nations that changed over time,  he presents the immense growth in Vienna's Jewish population in the 19th century with an emphasis on Jewish population of the Danube aiming to spread fear among the German population that Jews aimed to control their land (two charts showing the rise of Jewish settlement in the area in 1860 and 1938). All this leads to the conclusion that Hitler being born in Lower Danube - where Jews long held power in history - caused the young child to recognize the damage created by Jews and stand against them as Germany's leader making Judaism "harmless". The booklet apparently came out shortly after the Anschluss - Austria's annexation by Germany in March 1938 - meant to justify the German Reich's takeover of various areas, rectifying the "historical injustice" against Jews.

At the end of the booklet lithographic plates serve the author's antisemitic purpose: King Albrecht's report ordering Jews' expulsion "for reasons beneficial to the state", a 1463 page justifying Jews' expulsion from Vienna for money lending, expulsion of Jews and money changers from Vienna, historical illustrations of Vienna's "flourishing Jewish trade", an illustration of authorities visiting a Jewish press office to levy tax due to false reports, Eisenstadt ghetto gateway, Parochet from Eisenstadt synagogue, home of Jewish wine merchant who "expanded his home" in Eisenstadt, and more.
