The destruction of the Jewish city of Kovna - an important and early publication about the Kovna Ghetto - testimonies, photographs, documents, maps. Munich, 1948
אומקום פון דער אידישער קאוונע - Destruction of the Jewish City of Kovna - by Yosef Gar - Testimonies, Photographs, Documents, Maps. Published by the Association of Lithuanian Jews in the American Zone of Germany - Munich, 1948.
A detailed documentation of the war years in the Kovna Ghetto - the largest Jewish community in Lithuania - written by Yosef Gar who experienced the ghetto's horrific ordeals firsthand. The first part of the book documents the difficult events that occurred in the ghetto since its establishment - the brutal Nazi takeover, the struggle between life and death, despair, mass murders and cruelty of the murderers, resistance attempts, destruction, the ghetto's transformation into a concentration camp and more. The second part provides a systematic overview of how the ghetto nonetheless existed despite the atrocities - its social structure, activities of the Jewish Council in the ghetto, functioning of institutions, schools and cultural life. This is the earliest and most detailed publication documenting life in the Kaunas ghetto. Accompanied by photo plates from the ghetto - buildings, important streets, the ghetto fence, forced labor photos, execution photos, and a ghetto map. In Kovna, Poles, Ukrainians and Lithuanians aided the Nazis in extermination more than anywhere else, described in detail. (During Operation Barbarossa, Kovna was captured by the Nazis on June 24, 1941. In the first days of occupation, the entire country was flooded by brutal, unrestrained, violent nationalism directed against Jews who were murdered en masse).
Rare. Only one listing in the world cat library catalog - a single copy in the National Library in Jerusalem.
422 p. Missing part of index pages (letters פ-ת missing) at the end of book. Stains on cover and some pages. Very light moth marks on first pages. Light tears in the spine. Condition good - moderate.
