Antisemitic children's book in the midst of World War II. Serbia, early 1940s
Шта је y chy сељак Јован Петровић? А шта нас учи стварност? - "What Did Peasant Jovan Petrović See in His Dream? And What Does Reality Teach Us?" An antisemitic children's book published during World War II blaming Jews and English for Europe's dire economic situation. Serbia, early 1940s. Serbian.
An antisemitic children's book tells of a Serbian farmer unable to work the land due to poor demand. During WW2 he dreams an angel explains Europe's catastrophic production and job losses are Jews' fault. The angel takes him back in time supposedly showing how events unfolded.
How Jewish-English bought overseas goods arriving in England, raising prices to impoverish local European farmers. "I saw many processions of ships bringing cheap produce to the English isle, where English and Jewish traders bought them cheaply and resold to European peoples at a handsome profit. Though English and Jews profited greatly, overseas goods still undercut local markets, plunging European farmers into greater misery". He then describes Hitler heroically saving European peoples' economic woes: "After Adolf Hitler's rise I see how the millions-strong procession of unemployed steadily diminished year by year, month by month until finally vanishing completely". Hitler called Germans to produce more so Germany could sustain itself without imports. In reformed Germany the farmer became a nobleman.
Throughout the Jew is blamed for low economic standing: "You know why this terrible war, worse than all others, began. It began to prevent Europe's reconstruction, to liberate her from Anglo-American and Jewish dominance and Jewish deception...They want to prevent Europe breathing fully, developing according to her natural laws...".
The farmer awakes deciding Germans will buy farm goods reasonably without Jewish interest rates, and decides to return to the land work. Nazi Germany is portrayed saving the world economically: "In this war and after it Germany will ensure each European nation increases farm output to support itself, meanwhile Germany herself buys from all".
Accompanied by antisemitic color cartoons depicting Jews and English controlling Europe via money and "breaking markets" by raising prices without competitors. Concluding cartoon shows stereotypical Jew beside English pulling economic market strings reading "Until now Jews and English have played with farmers' fates. They always profited. No matter if world market prices for farm goods rose or fell, the farmer always paid the bill!".
