First translation of the prayer book into Dutch - The Hague, 1791-1792
Gebeden der Portugeesche Jooden: door een Joodsch genootschap uit het Hebreeuwsch vertaalt - Siddur for the Portuguese Jews in the Netherlands - first translation of the Siddur into Dutch - The Hague, 1791-1792 - Three volumes. Engraved illustrated title page on each volume. Dutch with Hebrew titles.
The first translation of the Siddur into Dutch, on the initiative of the "Talmidei Tzadik" group - students of Rabbi Tzadik Kohen Belinfante (1732-1786). After his death in 1786, his students established the group named after him. In the first volume's introduction, the group dedicates the Siddur to their great teacher, expressing the hope that just as the great universe with its wondrous expanses brings man to awe and reverence, so too will the siddur express the elevated spirit of "Ma Rabu Ma'asecha Hashem" to those not versed in Hebrew - now they will be able to express their sublime feelings in their native Dutch tongue.
