7 Series of Notgeld - 32 antisemitic emergency banknotes, Germany and Austria, early 1920s.
The series portray Jews as the hidden cause of Germany's troubles, and as the main profiteers from the war at the expense of the local population. Includes the Pfennig series based on the first German animated film Das Loch im Westen - The Hole in the West, depicting big war profiteers with a Jew shown in stereotypical facial features with a long nose and text that Germany's salvation comes through sending Jews to the gallows. Another series issued in Ernstatdt portrays wealthy Jewish capitalists who profited from the poor weak, other series use the Star of David to hint at Jewish rule in Germany.
Notgeld, or emergency money, was issued in Germany and Austria during the economic hardship and hyperinflation period following WWI in the early 1920s. These banknotes were officially produced by the state (Reichsbanknotes), and often by small towns and businesses (Notgeld), reflecting the widespread antisemitism present in Germany and Austria at that time, which led to the rise of the Nazi party presenting itself as the redeemer from the economic degradation Germany faced, blaming Jews as scapegoats.
