With the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940, most Dutch Jews lived in the Jewish community of Amsterdam, which became one of the largest centers of Jewish life in Europe. Out of 140,000 Dutch Jews, around 80,000 Jews lived in the city. Additional Jewish populations were concentrated in The Hague and Rotterdam. One of the first steps taken by the Nazis was confiscating Jewish property and money, converting it into food coupons to control their means of sustenance before deportation to camps.
