Documents - the first publication on the Holocaust of Bulgarian Jews based on official state documents. Sofia, 1945 - first edition which was archived over the years
Документи : Възлага се на Комисарството за еврейскитѣ въпроси да изсели за Полша 20,000 евреи ... / "Documents: The Commissariat for Jewish Affairs is tasked with deporting 20,000 Jews to Poland..." - The first publication of the Holocaust of Bulgarian Jewry through official state documents, and the first documentation of the deportation of Jews from Thrace, Macedonia with details by Nathan Greenberg, published by the Central Consistory of Bulgarian Jewry, Sofia, 1945 - the rare first edition.
Rare publication documenting the deportation of Jews from Thrace, Macedonia which details their dispatch to extermination based on official state sources. The book contains over 80 documents documenting orders, arrest orders for Jews and deporting them to extermination, detailed reports on the orders issued and implemented, financing of the extermination plan, letters exposing the order givers and implementers, and more. From this document emerges a clear picture of how Jews were taken for extermination - organized governmental recruitment to identify Jewish families, taking them at midnight "suddenly and without warning" to isolated places, transporting them at state expense to a known destination (Katovice and Treblinka) and plundering their property afterwards.
The book was written over the final three months of 1944. On September 30, Greenberg was appointed to the Commissariat for Jewish Affairs (KEV) and began searching for and organizing the surviving archives of this department, which directly implemented the deportation of Jews from the "New Lands of Bulgaria" to Nazi camps, publishing it in the work before us between January and early March 1945. This was the first publication to use official state documents to document the atrocities. At that time, countless testimonies were being published in Europe and the United States written by survivors and eyewitnesses from the ghettos and camps - here, the atrocities were published for the first time based on the official documents left behind by the criminals themselves. Over the years, the Bulgarian state preferred to obscure the horrific evidence appearing here; the book was destroyed immediately after publication in 1945, and for decades it was not cited in Bulgaria and its author's name did not appear in Bulgarian bibliographies.
Rare. Only one copy appears in the world library catalog world cat.
