Two early anti-Semitic issues of the French newspaper "Le Grelot" (The Bell)
Two early antisemitic issues of the French newspaper LE GRELOT - "The Bell".
- Issue dated June 8, 1890. A large title page illustration of the "money pipes" - citizens in naïve bird figures emptying their money into the descending state treasury pipe which leads straight into the money bag of the stereotypically faced Jew, next to a Jew depicted as the devil figure.
- Issue dated April 21, 1878. A large title page illustration of the stinky Jewish merchant of Chickens.
LE GRELOT (The Bell) French satirical newspaper, originally Republican and anti-clerical. Written by Arnold Mortier and published from 1871 to 1903. Each issue featured a color caricature on the first page, and four large format pages. The main designers were: Bartel, Henri Demare, Alfred Le Petit, Hector Moloch and Pepin. Due to its bluntness, Le Grelot was the subject of many lawsuits by the censorship. The newspaper adopted distinctly Republican positions from the outset and over the years became clearly more reactionary, antisemitic, anti-Freemasons and clergy. This change occurred with the employment of designers Gravelle, Alfred Le Petit and Fertom who adopted a stonger line. Nevertheless Le Grelot continued to appear until 1907. Since its establishment in 1871, Le Grelot published some 2,000 issues.
4 pages in each issue. Complete issues. Tears in the edges of both issues with minor losses. Condition good - moderate.
