Handwritten letter signed by Lord Arthur James Balfour to Lord Kelvin. March 19, 1892.
In his letter, Balfour recommends Mr. Crowell to Lord Kelvin as a suitable candidate for the position of Inspector of Stamps and Taxes: "Mr. Crowell, as I need not tell you, is a man whose services to the Unionist Party, and especially to the Liberal Unionists, have been highly esteemed."
The Unionist Party was a term used for various political movements and ideologies in Britain and Ireland during the 19th and early 20th centuries, advocating for the preservation of the union between Britain and Ireland and opposing Irish independence or autonomy. Following the death of William Henry Smith in 1891, Balfour was appointed First Lord of the Treasury and Leader of the House of Commons, during which he had the authority to appoint individuals to various positions.
