The "Seyss Period" refers to the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands under the rule of Arthur Seyss-Inquart, the German Reich Commissioner for the Netherlands. The booklet illustrates various aspects of daily life under occupation, including: Dutch citizens burying their valuables underground to protect them from Nazi looting, bicycle theft – during the occupation, the Nazis confiscated equipment, food, transportation, and resources from the Dutch population, including bicycles. Bicycles, a vital means of transportation in the Netherlands, were frequently seized for use by German soldiers or sent to Germany. This act became deeply ingrained in Dutch memory, symbolizing the hardships endured during the occupation. Other depictions include the Dutch people's hope for salvation "heard from London, " the persecution of anti-Nazi resistance fighters, dog theft, a father assisting his son during an arrest, and more.

In the Netherlands, more than in other European countries, humor was a primary means of coping with the dark period of Nazi occupation (see Dynasty Auction 28, Item 144).
