"The Fighting in Europe Has Ceased Since One Minute After Midnight" – Stencil-Printed Issue of the Dutch Newspaper De Morgen Post (The Morning Post), Dated Wednesday, May 9, 1945, Announcing "Peace in Europe" and the End of World War II. Rare.
At the top of the issue, the latest news is reported: "The fighting in Europe has ceased since one minute after midnight. Churchill stated this in his speech yesterday afternoon. Even the forces in Czechoslovakia have recognized unconditional surrender. German soldiers who continue to fight are no longer protected by the laws of war. The Russians have captured the cities of Dresden and Olomouc in Czechoslovakia. The King of England delivered a speech last night in which he thanked G-d for saving England from danger...".
Further in the issue, important public announcements appear regarding national efforts to deal with those who collaborated with the Germans during the war: "The N.B.S. office is located at Schoolstraat 5-7. It is currently open to the public daily from 9:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00. Its purpose is to provide our people the opportunity to file complaints and accusations against unpatriotic elements, collaborators, etc. Complaints must be submitted in a concise and well-founded manner on forms available directly from the office, based on an existing list of facts. Through this process, we can participate in the most thorough possible cleansing of our nation, which has been infected by Nazi propaganda...". Toward the end of the issue, encouraging words about the reconstruction of the Netherlands are included: "The reconstruction of the Dutch people is directed towards greater partnership, with the goal of uniting various organizations, associations, and individuals committed to the material, physical, and mental rehabilitation of all those affected by the war... This requires great cooperation, immense effort, and a spirit of self-sacrifice never before seen... The reconstruction of the Dutch people will not rest until this right and duty are fulfilled..."
