"Dachau" – The First Official Report Exposing the Horrors of the Camp, Published by the U.S. Seventh Army Team Shortly After Its Liberation. Germany, 1945 – First Edition

Dachau – An Early Report on the Horrors of the Dachau Concentration Camp – Published and Written by the U.S. Seventh Army Team Shortly After the Camp’s Liberation. A Firsthand Account of the Atrocities Committed in the First Nazi Concentration Camp, and the Second to Be Liberated by the Allied Forces. The report is accompanied by harsh photos taken by the 163rd Signal Photographic Unit of the Seventh Army and was printed by the 649th Engineer Topographic Battalion. Germany, 1945 – First Edition.

"No words or photographs can fully convey the impact of these shocking scenes, yet this report presents key facts and images to emphasize the nature of the crimes the SS committed thousands of times each day—to remind us of the terrible capabilities of certain classes of men, and to strengthen our resolve that they and their works shall vanish from the earth… At Dachau, the prisoners’ sole purpose was to survive under the most primitive and brutal conditions, constantly threatening both their sanity and physical existence…" – From the introduction by Colonel William W. Quinn.

An important report detailing the operations of Dachau from its establishment by the Nazis in 1933, the worsening conditions of the prisoners following the outbreak of World War II, the camp’s internal organization, and the classification of prisoners by nationality. It exposes the shocking atrocities committed in the camp, including the first official report from the U.S. Seventh Army, which encountered the horrifying sight of approximately 13,000 corpses—prisoners who had died in the last three months due to starvation or typhus, many of whom bore signs of severe abuse. The report also describes the gruesome discovery of dozens of bodies crammed inside train cars, victims of the camp’s final prisoner transport, and more.
The second part contains harrowing testimonies from former prisoners, detailing the extreme suffering endured in the camp. Many passages are almost unbearable to read, recounting atrocities that seem unimaginable as human acts. Prisoners were forced to stand naked for hours in the freezing cold, witness executions of fellow inmates as punishment for minor infractions, and endure beatings, submersion in ice-cold baths, injections of toxic substances, and deliberate starvation. Psychological torture was inflicted to break their spirit and prevent escape attempts. The report also provides a deeply disturbing account of the inhumane medical experiments conducted on prisoners.
The booklet is illustrated with graphic photographs taken by the 163rd Signal Photographic Unit of the Seventh Army, including aerial views of the camp, images of prisoners at the time of liberation, and other chilling documentation of the horrors uncovered. It was printed by the 649th Engineer Topographic Battalion.
