Special Passover Booklet Published by Etz Chaim Talmud Torah in Toronto, Canada – 1944 – Adolf Hitler as the Haman of the Generation
"The People of Israel Throughout the World Will Be Redeemed from Their Strongest Enemy, Hitler – May His Name and Memory Be Erased." – Passover – אונזער לעבן / Our Life. A special Passover booklet, privately published by Etz Chaim Talmud Torah in Toronto, Canada, March–April 1944. Stencil-printed in three languages: Hebrew, Yiddish, and English (with different passages in each language). The booklet contains passages from the traditional Haggadah, modified with references to the Nazi genocide and Adolf Hitler portrayed as the Haman of the generation. Rare.
In his introduction, Rabbi Prof. Shmuel Mirsky writes:"I have seen the newspaper Chayenu (Unzer Lebn) that is published by and for you... There is nothing new under the sun. The cycles of history repeat themselves. Even today, a wicked and cruel ruler seeks to annihilate the Jews and murders the small children of our people. Those who survive are forced to wander. The Jewish people in Europe are now drowning in a sea of blood and perishing in agony. And the wicked tyrant laughs, believing that he has already achieved his goal, that—Heaven forbid—he has succeeded in destroying the Jewish people. But we know from Jewish history that each time, it ends in the downfall of our enemies. They are completely wiped from the world, while we gather new strength and continue to live as a thriving nation. When you, dear children, sit at the Seder on Passover night and reach the passage in the Haggadah—"For it was not just one enemy who stood against us to destroy us..."—you must pray and plead before God that this historical truth will be fulfilled once again. That the *Jewish people throughout the world will be redeemed from their greatest enemy—Hitler, may his name and memory be erased—and that Jewish life will be restored to its former strength." In the Yiddish introduction, the same idea is emphasized:
"Just as Pharaoh persecuted the Jewish people, so too we are now in the hands of a wicked ruler who seeks to annihilate us...".
The booklet includes passages from the traditional Haggadah, but with significant modifications and references to contemporary Jewish suffering and redemption: "How I Stole the Afikoman", "The Exodus of Our Generation is the Aliyah to Eretz Israel", A Yiddish Passage Comparing Adolf Hitler to Haman the Wicked, "Passover Preparations on the Eve of the Holiday", "Elijah the Prophet", Musical Notation for the Song A Pesach'dike (A Passover Song), A Special Version of Ma Nishtana, Alluding to the Suffering of European Jewry: "Throughout the year, we eat plenty of bread and cakes, but on this night, only matzah is our portion... And why do we eat so much bitter herb? And are we truly reclining like kings tonight?", "Elijah’s Song", "The Birth of Moses", "Moses and the Kid", "Abraham and the Three Angels". The English section contains: "The Hills Surrounding Jerusalem", "The Seder Song", "The Samaritans and the Passover Sacrifice", "Moses and Pharaoh", and more.
