An issue of Newsweek (U.S.) published just two days before the sentencing of the defendants in the Nuremberg Trials
An issue of Newsweek (U.S.), dated September 30, 1946. The cover features a photograph of Nazi war criminals Hermann Göring and Karl Dönitz, with the caption: "Uneasy Throats: Göring and Doenitz Awaiting Judgment." Published just two days before the sentencing of the defendants in the Nuremberg Trials (October 1, 1946).
Inside, the magazine states that the two will have to wait a little longer as 5,000,000 words of evidence are used to bring their trial to completion. The inner pages provide an extensive review of world events unfolding alongside the court proceedings. On page 96, an important article by Raymond Moley titled "Making History at Nuremberg" explains that beyond the prosecution of Nazi war criminals, the trial aims to reshape international moral values by proving that those who conspired for war are directly responsible for all that transpired. The article presents the Nuremberg Trials as a crucial step in the progress of humanity.
Hermann Göring – Commander of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) and one of Hitler’s closest confidants. At Nuremberg, he was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to death, but committed suicide by cyanide the night before his execution.
Karl Dönitz – Commander of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) and, in the final months of the Third Reich, Hitler's appointed successor. Unlike many other defendants, he was not charged with crimes against humanity, and there was general consensus that despite his high rank, he did not play a direct role in the Holocaust. However, he was convicted of crimes against peace, waging aggressive war, and war crimes. He was sentenced to 10 years in Spandau Prison.
