A Jewish wedding in Algeria - Potochrome. the 19th century
A Jewish family from the Oran region (Algeria) in traditional costumes at a Jewish wedding, circa 1890. Photo in lithographic print (Photochrom).
Described on the Edge: 'Noce Juive province d'Oran' ['Jewish Wedding in Oren Province'].
The photochrome prints, which were popular at the end of the 19th century, are actually a process in which photography is transferred to the lithographic printing board. The process was invented in the 1880s by the Swiss Hans Jakob Schmid, who was a little ahead of the colorful photo system that was developed in those years but was still not practical commercially, widely distributed.
