An early poster against turning the Jewish cemetery in Vilnius into a football field. 1930s

A poster calling for mass attendance to come and prey in Horbat Yehuda Hahsidic synagogue, due to the intention of the Vilna authorities to turn the Jewish cemetery into a football field. Eretz Israel, 1930s. Salomon print.

In 1935, the town of Vilna was about to demolish the old Vilnius cemetery, where the Holy Bones of the Vilna goen were buried, as well as the Pototsky, the Rashash' and other great generation. Under state law, an old cemetery existed for more than a century, in the hands of the authorities to demolish it, and the municipality of Vilna wanted to make it a sports field. However, following various protests, the Vilna Municipality agreed to leave the plot of geniuses and the rest to destroy. The rabbis of Vilna, led by the genius Rabbi Chaim Ozer Gruzhinsky, worked with the authorities with great vigor to violate the decree, and indeed the authorities  leave the cemetery and not destroyed it. (Following the event, initiatives were launched to move the  Vilna goen Bones to Eretz Israel, but Rabbi Haim Ozer was Resist the matter with full force.).
