By the same author as the Portuguese Engineer, Manuel Azevedo Fortes was born in Lisbon in 1660. Educated at the Imperial College in Madrid from the age of 10, later a student at the University of Alcalá and the College of Plessis in France. He returned to Portugal where he was appointed chief engineer in 1719, rebuilding the fortification of Campo Maior, building the powder magazines in Estremoz, Olivença, Elvas and Campo Maior and designing the square in Vila da Zibreira.
