Second edition. One of the most important works by foreigners about Portugal. Its editor, Jean François, Baron de Bourgoing, writes in the Introduction: «It remained, therefore, to show Portugal from different sides, to describe its European provinces, and its colonies, customs, inhabitants, population, progress in science and arts, its politics, etc. and the Duke of Chatelet, whose work we publish, found himself able to perform this task. He consulted the most knowledgeable people of the country he traveled with greater care than the commonplace travelers.» (trans. by Bernardes Branco, Portugal and Foreigners, vI, 154).
