Father Rafael Bluteau, born in London, son of French parents, came to Portugal in 1668 by order of his religious congregation, learning our language in a short time and dedicating in-depth study and erudition to it. According to Innocent, “Fr. Bluteau was a truly wise and erudite man in the fashion of his time: more or less versed in all types of studies, he had a particular predilection for dead and living languages. [...]. The Portuguese owe him eternal gratitude, for giving them a Dictionary that they did not have, and that they needed so much; shaking himself and achieving it only with his own effort and study, which Academies could not overcome before, nor after!”.
