Palestine 1863 Ramle 10 Para HGS El Manscie PCGS UNC (Lec 46 )
There are two denominations to Ramle tokens, 10 & 30 Para. The assumption is that the HGS refers to the business /merchant that issued these tokens.
Ramla was at the height of its boom between the 8th and 10th centuries during the rule of the Umayyad dynasty. After a series of earthquakes in the 11th century and the transfer of the central government to Jerusalem, it lost its prestige. Only in the late 18th century and more particularly in the 19th century there wasa revival in the city. Christian pilgrims and Jews also visited the country and Ramla was one of the sites they visited. Hotels and businesses opened in it and probably this token was issued by one of these. Ramla also flourished during this period because both Jews and Arabs chose to live there because it was cheaper than Jerusalem and Jaffa.
There is also an opinion among few collectors finding that these tokens were not issued in the city of Ramla but in Alexandria Egypt in neighboring Rimmel near Alexandria where many foreigners mainly Italian inhabit at that time.
