A LARGE CAUCASIAN KINDJAL TRABZON OTTOMAN DAGGER, 19TH CEN.
So-called "Gurian" or "Black Sea" kindjal. Of a characteristic form with a wide double-edged blade with two narrow fullers on both sides. The grip is made of a polished horn wrapped with a twisted silver wire fastened to the tang by two steel rivets with silver caps. The scabbard is made of two wooden scales covered with black leather. The mounts are silver engraved and finished with niello.
Ottoman Empire, Trabzon region, ca. 1840-1870.
L: 20 1/2 in., (52 cm.)
Condition: The blade appers to be in its original conditon. The silver scabbard fittings show minor damage.
