AN EGYPTIAN APIS BULL FIGURINE OF TWO-COLORED MARBLE, CA. 1ST MILLENIUM BC
A marble depiction of Apis, the sacred bull in ancient Egyptian religion. Worshiped primarily in the Memphis region, Apis was identified as the son of Hathor, one of the primary deities in the Egyptian pantheon, assigned the role of being sacrificed and reborn in the worship of Hathor. The bull was chosen because it symbolized strength and fertility, which were both qualities linked with kingship. The worship of Apis continued beyond Egypt into the pantheons of both the Greeks and the Romans.
