Text in Spanish

"Noticia de la California, " published in 1757, is a three-volume work that is considered the first printed history of California, originally written by Miguel Venegas but edited and published by Andres Marcos Burriel.

The original manuscript was written by Miguel Venegas, a Jesuit scholar, between 1734 and 1739.

However, due to the Spanish Crown's reluctance to disseminate information about New Spain, it remained unpublished until it was sent to Madrid for revision and publication. Andrés Marcos Burriel, another Jesuit scholar, edited and published the work under Venegas's name as "Noticia de la California" in 1757.

The work contains valuable information about the geography, history, and natural resources of California, including the Jesuit missions, the indigenous peoples, and the exploration efforts of various explorers, including George Anson and Vitus Bering.

"Noticia de la California" is considered a cornerstone of Californiana collections and the first attempt to disprove the myth that California was an island.
