Darkei No'am Book and Milchemet Mitzvah Booklet - Venice 1697 - Single Edition - Most Rare – Stamp of Rabbi David Ha'Cohen Skalli and Handwritten Glosses
Questions and answers of Rabbi Mordechai Ha'Levi, the rabbi of Egypt, on the four parts of the Shulchan Aruch. Printed by the Vicenzo Brothers and Aloizi Bragadin.
At the end of the book, an additional booklet was printed (with a special title page) by Rabbi Avraham Levi, the author's son, about a great debate between him and the Torah scholars of the land of Israel and Salonika about the time of circumcision of a baby born at twilight of Shabbat eve. The booklet caused rage, as the author's introduction indicates: "I have done it to figure out the count of the eight days of the Milah (circumcision) … and I have named this book 'Milchemet Mitzvah' (War of Duty) sinc ei have gathered in it my opinion and the opinion of those who disagree with me…"
In some of the copies, on the reverse side of the title page there was a large drawing of the Temple. In the copy before us, the drawing is torn and restored.
Rabbi Mordechai Ha'Levi (1600-1684) was the rabbi of Egypt. His son, Rabbi Avraham (1650-1704) replaced him. Rabbi Avraham was a great Torah Scholar. His Halachic rulings were printed in his book 'Ginat Veradim' (Garden of Roses). The composition before us was printed in his life.
The book contains several signatures and stamps of rabbis, including the signature of Rabbi David Skalli from Algeria. Several commentaries and notes, apparently in Rabbi Skalli handwriting.
Most rare! The National Library does not have a complete copy.
282, 42 pp.
Condition: Good. The title page has crumbled and has been restored. New cover. Tiny moth holes.
