Chochmas Odom- Binas Odom. Second Edition. Vilna-Horodna 1828. Uncensored.
Fundamental two-part halachic work by R. Avrohom Danzig of Vilna, the Chayei Odom.
In this edition there is an introduction on the title page of the Binas Adam that was omitted from all the subsequent editions. In it the author writes “the words of my mechutan Gaon Yisroel U’Kedosho whose waters we drink, the Mekubal Eloki Ha’Chasid Ha’Mefursam Moreinu HaRav Eliyahu, Chassid of our community (Vilna Gaon), are rarely brought and I have heard complaints that in my work Chayei Adam there are times that I disagree with his words. There is no doubt that those who complain are not familiar with the proper way to study the poskim, for such is the way of the Holy Torah, one builds the other destroys, students disagree with their teachers as the Tur with his father the Rosh…” It is unclear why this introduction was omitted from subsequent editions.
The seforim of the Chayei Odom were written to serve as basic works of Halocha for both scholars and laymen. Following its first publication they became enormously popular and were reprinted tens of times. In many communities there were “Chevras” that met daily for the study of Chayei Odom.
