Mechakrim B'Talmud. Berlin 1937/8. Author's dedication.
Book of novella on the topics of Nezikin, by R. Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg (Sridai Aish), with a handwritten inscription, signed “HaMechaber”, to R. Tzvi Landau.
Following the Nazi’s rise to power in 1933, they systematically attempted to eradicate books written by Jewish authors, holding public book burnings where tens of thousands of books were destroyed. This sefer published in Berlin in 1937/38 is extremely unusual, and demonstrates the triumph of the “people of the book” over the Nazi tyrant. See the end of the sefer where the author cryptically mentions “difficulties” involved in its publication.
R. Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg (1884-1966), was a noted European Rav, Posek and Rosh Yeshiva. He is best known for his work of responsa Sridai-Aish. Born in Poland, he studied at the yeshivas of Mir and Slabodka. He taught at and eventually became Rosh Yeshiva of the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin. After the war, he lived in Montreux, Switzerland until his passing in 1966.
