R. Eliyohu (Elya) Gutmacher. Historical letter to his son R. Tzvi Gutmacher. 1858.
Writing (in Yiddish-Deutsch) that he has received word that a misfortune has befallen his nephew R. Hirsch who lives in America, and therefore urgently requires financial help which would allow R. Hirsch’s family who were still in Europe to travel to join their father. Although he has been requested, to ask his children to assist, he is reluctant to do so, as they have already given generously. However he requests his son, to write to his grandmother, requesting aid, but not to tell her the precise circumstances but just to allude to them.
R. Eliyahu Gutmacher, also known as R. Elya Greiditzer (1796-1875), was one of the foremost disciples of R. Akiva Eiger. He was renowned as a great miracle worker to whom many turned in time of need. His son R. Tzvi (to whom this letter is written) tragically passed away in his father’s lifetime. In memory of his son he published the sefer Nachlas Tzvi. As is well known, he writes in his introduction that “when one is in need of salvation he should learn from this sefer, following which, he should pray…. and then he will be answered”. This is a well-known segulah, and many learn from the sefer regularly.
